Summary: Yak Yak Yak
Comment: I'm a big fan of the book this is based on, which is what attracted me to the game. I'm GLAD the ending is not the same as the book because, really, what fun would that be? While reading the book is not essential to playing the game, it might help give you some insight to the characters.

If you're accustomed to action-based games, this is NOT the game for you. This is a puzzle game, consisting of lots and lots of dialogue, picking up items, and solving mental challenges.

As others have said, I do wish there were "shortcuts" in the game. Walking/running from one end of the map to the other ate up a lot of time. While I did enjoy the scenery, a lot of game time could have been saved if there were quick transport options.

Also, my game ran on Vista, but I did run into a couple glitches. I found myself saving often, because certain items, when examined closely, caused the program to crash. It didn't happen often, but it occurred enough times to become mildly annoying.

It is impossible to get through this game without some kind of cheat sheet. Some required actions or items made absolutely no logical sense. (For example, a conversation is held with someone who's hanging out in the bathroom... Why is s/he there? There's no explanation.) I don't know if the game creators were trying to be clever about their hiding places, but too often I was not provided with enough info to successfully solve or understand what I was supposed to do.

Even with all that said though, I thoroughly enjoyed this game. It was dark yet sophisticated, much like the book. I didn't want to stop playing, even after several hours. The storyline flowed smoothly, and the characters kept me guessing.

Comment: The game itself was interesting. Two drawbacks are 1. There is a glitch with the game that boots you out stating your computer has a virus (which is not the case) and 2. Game does not allow you to pass over dialog from game actors which became extremely long and boring.

Summary: I feel cheated...
Comment: So I'm at a point early in the game in which I can't go upstairs without a light. The flashlight I found has no batteries and though I've matches I can't seem to make a flaming torch from anything in my kit. Haven't been able to find any batteries. As someone else here wrote, if you do something out of sequence the game can get stuck. Unlike Herinteractive these programmer-geeks at AWE think too linearly and haven't woken up to the internet age and the ability to create a hints board. My daughter's pretty fed up with this game and I don't blame her.

Summary: Challenging and unpredictable= fun
Comment: First off I have to comment on the few people who've actually complained about the ending being different from the book. DUH! Let go of your ego's that were saddened because you thought you were so clever for "already knowing" who the killer is and then being wrong. Think about how that would affect the game, how you act, what you search for and concentrate on- if you knew the ending.

This game was very fun. I enjoyed it the most when I'd get a slight hint or direction and have to think about how to play it out next. I enjoyed the plot too as it was fun. I also liked the layout. You can still see your whole screen and click on your inventory and it's just presented at the top of the screen. You can also click on documents and books to read some of the printed materials you picked up. You pick up a lot of items along the way and sometimes you have to "disassemble" them to get other items out of them. That was the most fun figuring out and trying to disassemble or combine other items to re-assemble. Definitly keep in mind as many are saying, that you need to be into this type of game to play or it could be incredibly boring.

Some downsides: It was a pain to go all over the island and then back to the house. There should be more actual "short cuts/secret tunnels" or quick links to say "go to..."

I have no idea how anyone could ever solve this without a cheat. It is very fun to have a slight hint of direcion and still challenging to figure out how to follow that direction or hint- but very often you have no hint or direction and could wonder the whole island and house all day with no avail.

Also, if you pay close attention to everything that was said, sometimes there are little clues and what to investigate next. Unfortunatly, if someone walks in the room or calls you- while they are talking and you miss what they said, I couldn't find a way to replay what they said. Also, the words show on the screen and then they are also said aloud. I read faster than they speak and I would like to move on after- but you have to wait for them to say the whole thing.

Summary: worth the price
Comment: the graphics are fair and the story line is good, for a murder mystery. the characters do walk slow and, like the back of the cover says, there is foul language. the foul language is a little more there than the violence. besides that it's a pretty good game.
