Banned for decades, this rediscovered classic of Holocaust Cinema was shot only three years after the war ended, making it one of the first films to deal with the Holocaust. DISTANT JOURNEY follows the struggles of Dr. Hannah Kaufman and her family from the time of the Nazi Occupation of Prague through her experiences in the transit camp of Theresienstadt (modern Terezin). Director Alfred Radok skillfully weaves together documentary-style footage with expressionist dramatic sequences to convey both the reality of history and the nightmare of its impact.

Customer Rating: Summary: A compelling account of a woman's journey through the Holocaust Comment: Made in 1950, Alfred Radok's "Distant Journey" touched on the painful and horrific theme of the Holocaust during a period where the general public was still coming to grips with the Nazi atrocities during WW II.
The movie follows the travails of a Jewish family in Prague - Dr Hannah Kaufmann and her family endure unimaginable horrors as they suffer through the persecution against the Jews. She loses her position at the local hospital, and even though she marries a Gentile, that doesn't save her from being eventually selected for deportation, ending up in Theresienstadt, supposedly the 'paradise camp", but in itself the scene of much human suffering. There are some painful scenes in here, made all the more stark by the documentary-like feel of the movie which is in black and white - amongst them, a scene where a transport of children arrive at the camp and as Hannah tries to get them to take a shower, they flee in terror, screaming "Gas!" repeatedly.
A truly touching and poignant drama, this movie is sure to find viewers amongst those interested in the history of the Second World War and the Holocaust.
