Sarka is the Czech version of Zena: Warrior Princess, or something like that. She's the leader of a band of female warriors who are sworn to avoid men at all costs. Then, a Prince Charming type shows up and she falls for him, ultimately betraying her fellow warriors who suffer defeat at the hands of the men. So she jumps off a cliff. Fibich was the third (and least well known) of the great trio of Czech Romantic composers--the other two were Dvorák and Smetana. He had a good theatrical instinct. This opera is brief, punchy, and full of good tunes. It deserves to be better known outside of the Czech lands, and this fine recording should accomplish precisely that. --David Hurwitz
