Karl Bohm was one of this century's great Mozart conductors--a fact that's apt to be forgotten in the flood of authentic instrument productions, many of them on DG's associated labels. He conducted Mozart with real love and affection, maintaining moderate tempos, allowing each work's gorgeous melodies a chance to sing and breathe. Mozart's symphonic music has its roots in the opera house, and so did Bohm. Listening to the witty woodwind interjections in the finale of Symphony No. 39, for example, you can readily imagine the witty exchanges of different characters in one of Mozart's comic operas. These beautifully recorded versions of Mozart's greatest symphonies belong in the collection of every fan of the composer. --David Hurwitz

Summary: Finest Mozart Performances I have ever seen.
Comment: On these DVDs are the finest performances of Mozart symphonies I have ever seen or heard. I once lived in Vienna and saw Bohm conduct. I was impressed with him then, but not as much as I am now. Karl Bohm is, without question, my favorite conductor of the 20th Century. I used to be a Toscanini fan, but now, I cannot listen to his work at all, after hearing Bohm. I also own the Schubert, Brahms and Beethoven symphonies, all of which are equally good. A very great musician, Karl Bohm, and a superb conductor.

Summary: Once more, with feeling
Comment: Pardon my self-indulgence here, but I bought the vinyl of 40 & 41 in 1973 when I was in college. I "knew" classical music from piano lessons through most of grade school, but with this recording, plus Vivaldi and "Clockwork Orange," I had just started truly discovering it, psychedelically enhanced.
To this day, for me, nothing in the entire classical repertoire compares to the 41st.
I have listened to many other recordings of the 41st since, and seen it performed several times. A classical music mentor of mine shamed me for owning Bohm's in the early 80s, and now, reading all the reviews here, I can see both his point, and why my soul cannot let go of Bohm's.
Bohm, relatively speaking, is heavy, ponderous, grandiose, weighty -- and so less accurate perhaps. This is not a flaw though per se. Bohm grew up in the Romantic tradition, and is grounded in the perspective of that time in history. He does not Romanticize Mozart, rather, he feels Mozart as a Romantic. What Mozart in his last symphonies has to say to us, who are in part Romantics, is sublime.
You owe it to yourself to hear what Bohm hears and conveys, to allow yourself to be touched this deeply. No other conductor I have ever heard achieves this. If you allow yourself only a historically accurate interpretation, you will miss out on how Mozart touches us deeper with the passage of centuries. Discover new places in your soul and let the tears flow.
On the vinyl, at the end of the 41st, very faintly but clearly, if you listen with headphones, you hear maniacal happy laughter. I wonder if it has survived the years, and if anyone has heard it or can explain it.

Summary: Perhaps a bit outdated, but still a favorite
Comment: This set my have fallen in recommendability a little recently according to some of the so called professional reviewers, but to me it is still one of the best. Bohm brings out the details and intricacies like few other conductors. Of course, there are many other exceptional recordings of Mozart's symphonies, by such conductors as George Szell, Erich Kleiber, Bruno Walter, Josef Krips and so forth. Bottom line is this is an excellent set that is easily recommended.

Summary: Worst Mozart Recording
Comment: I have to confess that I did not buy this product from Amazon or from any retailer for that matter.
As part of my research I listened to the entire CD from the library.
I am not sure why people give this CD high ratings. This is the WORST PERFORMANCE of Mozart's symphonies that I have heard.
I have been listening to Mozart for close to a decade and along with Beethoven is my favorite composer.
My criticism of this CD is mainly that this is not the way Mozart's music is to be played. Mozart's music is supposed to be full of energy, dynamism and melody.
I would direct you to either Mackerras or Neville Marriner.

Comment: Thank you all for the infomative recommendations. I also find Böhm's interpretation impressive. I think that right now it is probably the best there is on the market - it is only comparable with two other conductors: Marriner - and according to my ears even better: Adam Fischer (and the Danish Radio Sinfonitta- who are currently recording all of Mozart's symphonies) Mozart: Symphonies [Hybrid SACD]. The 3 three of them are right now on the top 10 of the best Mozart interpreters. Just thought we should keep the head cool and hear the other versions as well.
