The Czech region of Bohemia, an area in central Europe that borders Germany, Poland and Austria, has undergone tremendous upheaval in the last 100 years. In 1918, the Czechoslovak Republic was founded and its inhabitants included nearly 7 million Czechs, 2 million Slovaks, and 3 million Germans. Following Hitlers rise in power and the Munich Agreement, control over the predominantly German region was transferred to Germany. Soon after the war ended, however, nearly all Germans were expelled and the area fell under Communist rule. After the iron curtain dissolved, old conflicts resurfaced and Bohemia has reverted into a land of two peoples: the Czechs and the Germans.
In this film Pavel Schnabel tells the story of the Bohemian people, men and women of the present whose lives are entangled in the past. In three regions of the country--the North, West and South--we come across stories that are all so different and yet so very familiar. Czechs and Germans recount moments of mistreatment, displacement, and destruction, the results of nationalistic fervor, seething hostilities and bitter reprisals. These two sides warily regard each other, never forgetting and rarely forgiving.
The Bohemian Knot does not call upon experts of political history to comment on past events. Rather, the film reveals a montage of moods and memories, voices and atmospheres. These are true stories told by those who were actually there and experienced them, their words echoed by empty landscapes where buildings once stood. Their recollections seem to prohibit any chance for peaceful coexistence, but some remain hopeful.
